February 8- Activity A:

Find two artists' websites and/or online presences (e.g. social media).

Both artists should be living, one should have been born before 1989, the other should have been born after 1989 (I've chosen this date, as it marks the introduction of the 'world wide web').

The artists:

I chose Violet Dennison for the artist which is born after 1989 and Richard Long for being born before 1989.

My thoughts:

By looking at both of their websites I can see that I much prefer Richard long's website to Violet Dennison through the way Long's website to me is more clearly laid out. When you look up Violet Dennison you get to this page:

From there you have to cut onto the link which then takes you to the website:

My first thoughts looking that this page I feel that it has an interesting look by showing the work very nice and clear. And when you scroll down you just see big photos of her work which to me is one of the only things I like about this page because you get to see a lot of her work in a clear way and the names and when they were made. Which really helps me because I hate having to look everywhere for information on a piece of work.

Similarly Richard Long does that by showing his work with photos:

However, I feel that Long has a better layout where he has fewer images of each work and then you can click on the image and get the information up for it. I feel that the Long's layout makes the website look more professional and Dennison's look more experimental through the way Long has all the main column are layout clear and are easier to read.

But as for Dennison's the writing to me is so unclear and makes it hard for me to read. Through the colour and style of the work, but I also think that she might be experimenting with this style maybe so it more clear to look at the work and not the writing itself.

Screen shot of the page
They both have a similar biography through the way they both have a brief bit about them, for example when they were born and where. The rest is when their shows were on and where. This show that both artist's websites are more about the art and not the artist themselves, which for me, interests me more because I'm not a person which really clears about what the artist was doing and where. I clear more about the art itself.

I feel that Long's website breaks the 'stereotypes' of people being born before 1989 that people don't know how to use and work the 'world wide web' and which they can't make a good looking website. But Long's I feel has a better looking website which makes more sense then Dennison because I feel that Dennison is quite confusing to me and I don't really know how an where to go on the website to find the information that I want.

Long's almost functions as a picture book which you can go and look at the image of his work and there's not much information about the piece but that's pretty much with both of them. Because Long is a more of an established artist there is no information to contact him or anything like that, but for Dennison's there is a part at the top of the writing on the side showing contact detail and this would be because she is an up and coming artist and want to put herself out there.

Overall, I feel that it really doesn't matter whether an artist is born before or after 1989 their website can have better or worst layouts and it's all down to personal preference on their websites.

February 1- Activity A:

The Activity:

Visit one exhibition held in a public gallery and visit one exhibition held in a commercial gallery.

My thoughts

The first gallery that I visited was a show that was showing within the atrium of Middlesex, I was really interest while they were setting the show up. However, I'm not so sure if this sits within a public or commercial gallery but I feel that this will add another angle at the galleries.

Photo I took of the whole gallery show
The show called 'Speculative spaces 2017' was put together by within a partnership project with AKTO interior architecture, Athens Thessaloniki and MDX Graphic design. The main whole idea for this show was water, "Water was the common ground that began our quest, influenced by its many different qualities." (words by them on one of the boards) The element of this being a 'gallery show' made by the student makes for a more interesting and personal layout, which interest me more. This is shown through the shapes, space and style that they were able to create which made for a very welcoming 'gallery show'.

Photo I took closer up to the show
This part of the show interested me the most through the way they laid out the display boards in an unique way that I haven't seen much before. By laying this part out like this it really shows off the main theme of this show by the images on top being maps which mainly show the water.

Photo I took within the show

Another way I feel that they have made the viewer welcoming is by including and making the viewer interact with the art. By placing these black boxes full with different sized books which show pieces of work by different students. This makes for a more impressive show through the way the view could or couldn't not go and look at these books or not. Adding an extra interesting part of the show.

Another element which makes this 'gallery show' more interesting and welcoming through the way they have aloud the viewers to become a part of the show through doing this.

- Step 1: Draw your version of Tower Bridge
- Step 2: Post it our Instagram using #
- Step 3: Wait for surprise.

I feel that you can get more of these type of interactions within these types of galleries then public galleries, through the way there they allow the people, which made this to be more open to their ideas which are easier to bring together because there is open to interpretation in their way. However, in a more Public gallery, the Gallery itself has quite a bit of control on how the pieces should be placed so they can fill the space and show as much different work within a space.

The second place I went to was Tate Britain, which is a very welcoming place but in a different way. It is very welcoming through the way I can see some many different pieces for many different artists around the World which in my opinion makes Tate Britain more interesting through the way there is not just one main theme or idea, there are many because of all the different works from many different artists.

The main interest which I feel is better than the first gallery is that a public gallery like Tate Britain open me to many different and diverse art that they have to show, from paintings to large sculptures. However, the layout of the piece makes for a less and nearly never interaction with the viewer through the way you can with Shimamoto's piece be behind glass which makes that barrier between the viewer and the piece, but there is the main reason for that is that these are very important piece from famous to very famous artist with shouldn't be touched by the viewer. Also, a lot of the work can be fragile, so the viewers have to say away. Another way this is show is with the wire around Beugs' piece which makes the piece be away from the viewer so there's not interaction.

However, public galleries have a more welcoming and better aesthetically than the first gallery through the clear white wall which for me makes for a more opening and cleaner space fro work to be. Also the work is seen better with a white background. However, with the first gallery there was too much on all the walls, which made for a more cluttered look. This to me is too much to look at once and some of the angles made for hard standing areas to look at the work.

For example:

Photo I took of inside the gallery

Overall, I feel that both styles of galleries make for very different experiences which make the viewer have many different reasons to the works within them. But comparing these two very different types of galleries is very hard through the way they both have great and not so great qualities between them. However, I did enjoy my experiences in both of else galleries.

Royal Academy of Arts- Abstract Expressionism- Extras- Fortnum & Mason's

Just across from the RA's Abstract Expressionism show there has been Fortnum & Mason's and the wonderful window art that they show every Christmas time. This Christmas window display really interested me through the various designs on display. In each display there were many different elements which captured my eye, from layout, to colour, to small details to add a hidden pattern element to the pieces.

Together We're Merrier

The themes for Fortnum & Mason's 2016 Christmas window display was 'Together We're Merrier'. The concept was devised by communication agency Otherway and Fortnum & Mason's customer experience director Zia Zareem-Slade.

Otherway has created a 72-page Christmas brochure for the brand and a series of posters presenting nine festive stories.

Otherway has created a 72-page Christmas brochure for the brand and a series of posters presenting nine festive stories. Each poster has the many image, layout of the window displays which adds another element to these window displays. They're not just normal everyday window displays, they are a joint group work of art.

Each window display is like its own story which tells a tale of an unlikely pairing, from a wolf and a sheep to a butcher and a turkey. They have created the story of the unlikely pairing putting aside their differences for the festive season. The window display stories are told through rhymes and illustrations and characters were drawn by Bret Ryder using sketches provided by Otherway.

The campaign was brought to life in 3D by a team of sculpture artists, who created large-scale models for window displays using fibre glass moulds based on Ryder’s artwork. A team of theatre make-up artists then hand-painted each model to match his illustrations.

Background displays were made for each window using thousands of bought and found objects. Windows also feature smaller scenes showing model mice enjoying festive moments.

First window display

Around the side of Fortnum & Mason's building there was another set of window display, which was but wasn't a part of the window display at the first. It joints into the Christmas theme, but they're to a part of 'Together We're Merrier'.

This side of the window display was quite interesting through the way they make the basket that you can buy in the store into angles or birds. With that they have connected the Christmas theme through each window display. Also its a very unique way to show the items that you can buy within the baskets.

Sun and Moon

A giant sun and moon hang from the shop’s atrium in an embrace and Fortnum’s will be highlighting unusual food and drink pairings in store throughout the Christmas period.

I never saw this piece through the way in was inside the store and I didn't really know that there was this piece until, I was looking up about these window displays and I came across the creativereview website and there was the image of it. I love the different effects from the poster of the finished piece with the main idea the same, but the overall design coming out much more different.

The brand has also released some limited edition products inspired by the campaign, including a six-person cracker with jokes written by Stephen Fry.

I love the fact that they're not just window displays, there's so much more to them by bringing so many different people from different profession to add their style a element to all this time 'Together We're Merrier'.

Fortnum & Mason says the campaign aims to celebrate “the coming together of family, friends and foes” after a year in which Brexit and the US election has divided friends, family and generations. “[Christmas] is a time of togetherness and celebration and in the current climate, we felt this message was never more relevant,” says Zareem-Slade.

The Early Bird & The Night owl

I really love the background for this piece through the way that they are all recycled clocks that they have collected and painted white. They have the element of time show through this piece of the cock-rail being the early bird of the morning and the night owl being night with the clock surrounding them with time. The characters come together fir Christmas, but in real life they would never meet.

The Bull & The China

Behind the scenes of the background-from-

As before, this window display has a very interesting, layered and textured background. I really like the way the backgrounds have high levels of detail through texture, but they hold back on the colour to create a contrast from the focal points and the background. This makes the focal piece stand out more and I feel that the background is a white colour to imitate snow as the display is Christmas themed.

I really love this piece through the way they have created an effect of the letter are going to explode out of the window because polar bears and penguins shouldn't meet, breaking the law of the world.

The Mice

The most interesting and unique part of all these displays were taught in each display there were these hidden little mice. Each mouse has its own personality which reflects the display that it is in. I love the way that the artist put so much detail within each of the displays to create really effective works of art.

Overall, it's not only traditional types of art should be shown as art, but all other types of style of art form should have a show and I feel that more shops should put more work within their window displays to make more interesting and colourful windows. Also, the display has shown me a new way to view art.
